Reactions
Six ways to answer a post in one press, and how to reach the other five.
Pressing the heart likes a post. Pressing it again takes the like back. That is the whole of it if you want it to be.

There are six reactions: Like, Love this, Funny, Congratulations, Insightful and Sad.
Three ways to reach them, one for each way of using a computer:
- Hover over the heart with a mouse and hold still for a moment
- Press and hold the heart on a touchscreen
- Press the up arrow when the heart has keyboard focus
Your own reaction then replaces the heart on the button, in its own colour, so you can see what you said without opening anything.

Choosing a different reaction replaces the one you left rather than adding a second — one reaction per person per post. Choosing the same one again takes it back.
The author is told once. Changing your reaction does not interrupt them a second time, but it does correct what their notification says.
Why six and not a free choice of emoji Copy a link to this section
One reaction is too blunt for anything but approval: there is no honest way to answer bad news with a heart, so people either say nothing or say the wrong thing.
A free choice of every emoji is the opposite failure. It turns a one-press signal into a decision, it cannot be counted, and it can be used to say things nobody should be able to say to a stranger in one press.

The feed shows one number, because that is all a timeline needs. Open the post itself and the reactions are broken down by kind.
