Group conversations

Up to twenty people in one thread, and what happens when somebody cannot be added.

A conversation can hold up to twenty people.

Starting a group Copy a link to this section

Choose New message, pick more than one person, give the group a name, and start it. The name is what everybody sees in their inbox, so it is worth naming it after the thing rather than the people.

Who can be added Copy a link to this section

The same rule as a one-to-one conversation: every person in a group has to follow you back.

Everybody is checked one at a time when the group is created. If somebody cannot be added, the group is not created and you are told which person it was — rather than the group quietly starting with one fewer member than you chose and nobody noticing until they wonder why she never replies.

Leaving Copy a link to this section

Leave this group in the conversation's ⋯ menu removes you. The conversation carries on without you and you stop receiving it.

Muting Copy a link to this section

Mute this conversation stops it adding to your unread count without leaving it. Nobody is told, and you can still open it whenever you like. A busy group you want to read on your own schedule is exactly what this is for.

How long the name can be Copy a link to this section

Up to 80 characters. It is the only field a group conversation has — there is no description and there are no rules, because a thread is not a room. For rooms with a description, rules and members who come and go, see Groups.
