Events

Planning something with a date on it, who can answer, and what happens when the time or the place changes.

An event is a post with a date attached. It is made from Events in the sidebar rather than from the composer, because an event needs a time and a post does not.

Press Plan an event and fill in the form. Only two things are required: a name, and when it starts.

What the form asks for Copy a link to this section

  • What is it? — the name, at least 3 characters
  • Anything else people should know? — the description, optional
  • Starts, and optionally Ends — an event cannot end before it starts
  • This one is online — which swaps Where for a Link to join
  • A picture for it — one of eight drawings, or none. There is no upload here; the drawings are part of Easybie
  • Hosted by — you, or a page you run. Only shown if you run one
  • In a group? — only shown if you are in one

Times, and whose clock they are in Copy a link to this section

You enter the time in your own timezone, and the form says which one it is using.

Everybody else sees it in the host's timezone, labelled, rather than converted into theirs. A gathering at seven in Oslo is at seven in Oslo whoever is reading, which is the number people actually need when they turn up.

The timezone is fixed when the event is made and cannot be changed afterwards. If you are planning something in another country, the practical answer is to put the local time in the name.

Who can see it Copy a link to this section

An event made outside a group is public. There is no audience picker on the event form.

An event made in a group belongs to the group and is seen on the group's terms, not yours.

Either can be changed afterwards from the post, the same way you would change any post's audience.

Answering Copy a link to this section

Three answers: Going, Interested and Can't go. You can answer from the event's own page or straight from the card in your feed, and you can change your mind — a new answer replaces the old one.

Take it back removes your answer entirely. That is different from Can't go: one says no, the other says nothing.

Who sees your answer Copy a link to this section

  • Going and Interested — the names are visible to everybody who can see the event
  • Can't go — only the host sees who said it

The numbers are public either way, including how many said they cannot come and how many were invited. If you would rather not be counted, Take it back rather than Can't go.

Guest lists show up to 50 names.

Inviting people Copy a link to this section

The host, and anybody who answered Going, can invite others by typing their address. Being merely Interested is not enough.

You cannot invite somebody who would not be able to see the event — Easybie refuses rather than sending an invitation to something they would find locked. Pages cannot be invited. An event holds up to 500 invitations.

An invitation is a notification and nothing more. It does not answer for the person and it does not add the event to their list.

When something changes Copy a link to this section

If you edit the time or the place, everybody who said Going or Interested is told. People who said Can't go are not.

Changing the name, the description or the picture notifies nobody. That is deliberate — a typo fixed at midnight should not wake anybody up — but it means a renamed event can surprise people, so put anything important in an update instead.

Post an update (host only) writes a note that everybody coming is told about. It appears in the discussion under the event and can be replied to like anything else.

Adding it to your calendar Copy a link to this section

Add to your calendar downloads the event as a file your calendar app will accept. Anybody who can see the event can take one.

It is a copy, not a subscription. If the host moves the date afterwards, Easybie tells you — your calendar does not. Re-download it and the entry updates in place rather than doubling.

An event with no end time becomes a one-hour entry.

What Easybie does not do Copy a link to this section

There are no reminders. Nothing is sent the morning of the event, or an hour before, or at all. That is what the calendar file is for.

There is no cancel button. An event is removed by deleting its post, and deleting it tells nobody — people who said they were coming simply find the link stopped working. If something is called off, post an update saying so before you delete it.

The Events list Copy a link to this section

Events shows everything coming up that you are allowed to see — not only yours, not only ones you were invited to — soonest first, up to sixty of them.

Past events are not listed. An event that has already started drops off, though its link keeps working.
