Notes, diaries and wiki pages

The four kinds of long-form writing, and what makes each one different.

The writing editor makes four kinds of thing. They share an editor and almost nothing else.

Article Copy a link to this section

Long-form writing, published to your followers and to the feed. It can carry a cover picture and shows a reading time.

This is the one most people mean.

Note Copy a link to this section

Something short you want to keep and be able to find again. Public, no cover, no reading time — a note is not trying to be an essay and does not pretend to be one.

Diary Copy a link to this section

Private unless you say otherwise. A diary entry is for you, and the date is its title: you do not have to invent a name for a Tuesday.

Nothing about it appears in the feed, on your profile or in anybody's search results while it is private. If you later decide an entry should be public, you can change that — but the default is the safe direction, deliberately.

Wiki page Copy a link to this section

Something you expect to keep editing. Every version is kept, and anybody who can read the page can read its history.

That is the point of it rather than a side effect: a page that changes without a record is a page nobody can trust, and the history is what makes it worth citing.

Choosing Copy a link to this section

The kind is chosen when you start, and it decides the defaults above. What it does not decide is who can read a public one — that is the audience setting, the same as on any post.

Where they live Copy a link to this section

All four are under Your writing in your account menu, drafts included. A piece you have not finished is there too, and the editor says so when it saves.
